The 2018 Honda CR-V is top in its class – arguably a pick above its luxury sibling, the Acura RDX.

I recently had the pleasure of test-driving the engaging and feature-rich 2018 Honda CR-V, courtesy of our friends at Rock Honda.

Find out more about this top-selling compact SUV with high safety ratings, in the iDSC Podcast below.

2018 Honda CR-V Test Drive & Review

Tom Smith: Welcome to iDriveSoCal, the podcast all about mobility from the automotive capital of the United States, Southern California.

Review my test driving the 2018 Honda CR-V from our friends at Rock Honda, located in the Los Angeles suburb of Fontana, California.

The CR-V is Honda’s compact cross-over slash SUV.

  • The Honda HR-V is the CR-V’s smaller sibling – sub-compact.
  • The Honda Pilot is the CR-V’s larger sibling – mid-size.
  • And the Acura RDX is the CR-V’s luxury sibling – same segment, compact.

I mention the luxury sibling in the Acura RDX because – both Honda.

Comparatively the CR-V is superior to the RDX – if you’re not worried about the badge.

2018 Honda CR-V Trims, Engines & Drivetrains

  • LX
  • EX
  • EX-L
  • Touring – top of the line

The LX is the base trim with 184-hp 2.4 liter 4-cylinder engine.

The EX is the next step up, then the EX-L and then the top of the line Touring.

  • All of those features a 190-hp 1.5 liter turbocharged 4-cylinder.

All the trims offer front-wheel drive or available all-wheel drive and any engine-drive combo will give you a combined 27 to 30-miles per gallon.

Impressive Stats on the 2018 Honda CR-V

The CR-V I drove had the Touring trim and before I get into the review it’s worth mentioning some impressive stats about the 2018 Honda CR-V.

  • The CR-V is one of the top-selling compact SUVs in the world.
  • The US governments safety ratings are tops across the board.
    • NHTSA – The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
      • Top marks in every category but one.
      • Five-stars everywhere except 4-stars in roll-overs.

Who’s it for?

I mention the safety rating because I’m a new Dad.

  • Definitely a family vehicle.
  • But sporty-ness absolutely allows for it to be much more than that.
    • Single
    • Newly married w/ family in on the mind.
  • Touring like what I drove with its leather accents and refinements definitely opens it up to a business person:
    • Junior executive
    • Senior executive playing it conservative.

2018 Honda CR-V MSRPs

Which brings us to CR-V Pricing – starting prices for each trim are:

  • LX $24,250
  • EX $27,050
  • EX-L $29,550
  • Touring $32,750

As always, these are approximated – you need to select yours and equip it to your liking.

Forget MSRP – Go to Rock Honda

Also, as always, you want to connect with our friends at Rock Honda in the Los Angeles suburb of Fontana and they’ll:

  • Give you the best deal in SoCal.
  • Treat you awesome.

I’ll connect you with them personally. Just email me Tom[at]iDriveSoCal[dot]com.

David Latif is the General Manager there – high powered executive that’s 100% accessible.

Hamid Javid is his second in command.

Veronica Orozco is another manager in case you’d prefer a woman’s touch in the whole buying process.

Back to the CR-V review:

Outside – the vehicle is sporty and sleek:

  • The Touring trim I drove had an element of sophistication too.
  • White with black accents.
  • Sharp-looking alloy rims.

It’s a Huge Compact SUV & Well Equipped

For a compact SUV, the 2018 Honda CR-V is huge.  There’s plenty of room for 5-adults for short trips around town.  And 4-adults will be very comfortable on those longer trips.

Additionally, the 2018 Honda CR-V provides plenty of cargo space.  That’s with the rear seats up and in use by your extra adults.  Drop those rear seats down and you’re left with a whopping 75.8 cubic feet of cargo space.

So, if you have a couple of Great Danes – they’ll fit easily.  That’s an extreme yet serious comparison. 🙂

The CR-V I drove was also very well equipped with features and tech:

  • Dual climate control
  • Electric parking brake
  • Heated front seats
  • Power moonroof
  • Lots of USB Ports
  • Honda Link
  • Apple CarPlay
  • Android Auto
  • Navigation
  • More
  • Karate kick rear-lift gate.
  • Walk-away auto lock.

Loaded with Honda Sensing Safety Tech

  • Blind spot info system
  • Cross traffic monitor
  • Road departure mitigation
  • Collision mitigation braking
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Lane keep assist

I was enjoying my test drive so much that I basically made it to Riverside.

  • The acceleration was great. I was solo but even loaded down I’m certain there’s plenty to give you that owning the highway feel.
  • It’s a compact SUV but it handles great – like a car.
  • But still gives you that up-right seating position also adding to the owning the road feel.

My Top-3 on the 2018 Honda CR-V

So that brings me to my top three things I like about the 2018 Honda CR-V from our pals at Rock Honda:

  1. Space – it’s huge inside but still super maneuverable.
  2. Styling – it’s a very good looking vehicle for a non-luxury compact SUV.
  3. Value – As I mentioned at the top. The CR-V brings it and if you’re like me and badge is not a big deal. Then you have to give the CR-V a serious look.

And as you do give the CR-V a serious look you need to do so with our friends @ Rock Honda.

CR-V = Comfortable Runabout Vehicle

Almost forgot – a little trivia. Ever wonder what the CR-V stands for? Why it’s CR “hyphen” and then the V separate? Two answers actually:

  1. Honda originally stated CR-V stood for Comfortable Runabout Vehicle
  2. Honda also republished a British review that referred to the CR-V as Compact Recreational Vehicle.

Thanks to our friends at Rock Honda.

  • Go see them just off the 210 in Fontana.
  • Email me and I’ll introduce you personally.
