2019 Toyota Tacoma
Test Drive & Review

#TacoGang @ West Coast Toyota Long Beach!

If you’re like me then the line between ‘needing’ a Toyota Tacoma truck and ‘wanting’ one is rather irrelevant.  It’s just a quick internal conversation that has something to do with saving money on moving stuff. Uh-huh. 😉

So, to be totally honest, about the full day I spent tooling around in the 2019 Toyota Tacoma I picked up from our friends at West Coast Toyota in Long Beach… well it was awesome!  Seriously it’s been on my to do list since launching iDriveSoCal.

I’ve been a Tacoma fan for years.  And what made the day even cooler was Bryan Miranda, from West Coast Toyota, coming along for the ride and handling my rapid fired questions all day long culminating in this iDriveSoCal Podcast.

Click play below to hear why Bryan’s officially been nicknamed “Beans” and check out the sweet Taco pics.  Also, Beans’s contact info is at the bottom.  He’s your got to for all things Tacoma and as always I’m happy to connect you if you like!  Drive on!

2019 Toyota Tacoma

Bryan Miranda: If you’re looking for a great, reliable, durable truck that you want to keep it for a really long time, you cannot go wrong with the Tacoma.

It starts off with the Toyota Tacoma SR, then comes SR5. The SR5 Double Cab then comes a TRD Sport. There’s TRD Off-Road. A more off-road version, which is the TRD Pro.

It starts to really change if you get the Limited.

The 2019 Toyota Tacom a TRD Pro looks ready to drive itself off-road!

Tom Smith: Welcome to iDriveSoCal, the podcast all about mobility, from the automotive capital of the United States, Southern California. Tom Smith here with –

Bryan Miranda: Bryan Miranda.

Tom Smith: Bryan Miranda, ladies, and gentlemen (Tom makes cheering crowd sound effect). We might insert something there or maybe we’ll just use my sound effect, I don’t know.

Bryan Miranda: Yeah.

Tom Smith: Sometimes my sound effect works.

“What was that…? Give it the beans! Give it the beans!”

Bryan Miranda: Whatever’s good.

Tom Smith: Bryan Miranda. I’m at West Coast Toyota in Long Beach. Our partners here at West Coast Toyota, we love these guys.

You want to get a Toyota, West Coast Toyota in Long Beach is the place to go to. Come say hi to Mr. Kenny Jumps, the General Manager, Steve Majick, the General Sales Manager.

The whole crew out here is fantastic, including Mr. Bryan Miranda, Product Specialist. This guy is like… honestly, he just stumped Professor Quan on some product knowledge.

The iDriveSoCal Crew at the Booth

Beans Reacts to the Professor’s Very Close Guess

Now granted, it was a trivia thing, it was Toyota specific, so obviously, Mr. Miranda, being an employee of West Coast Toyota, is going to have that one-up-man-ship on a Professor.

He, in fact, did get the Professor on… but the Professor’s guess was very close. It was on the capacity of a fuel tank. At any rate, I’m getting off topic already.

TRD Sport Test Drive

Trying to stay focused, it’s hard for me to do sometimes. I love chatting about cars, and Mr. Miranda’s a great guy to do it with.

We test drove the 2019 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport.

Bryan Miranda: Correct. Yes.

Cement 2019 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport

Even the Tacoma TRD Sport has insane ground clearance!

Tom Smith: Okay. I drove, but Mr. Miranda came with me and answered all of my Toyota questions, all of my Tacoma questions, and it was really cool.

Because usually, I do the vehicle reviews either by myself or occasionally, I’ll do one with a colleague at a particular dealer partner…

But this one was a lot of fun because Mr. Miranda is so… his depth of knowledge in Toyota and in the Tacoma, really in the whole lineup of the Toyotas, was beyond impressive.

There wasn’t a question that he couldn’t answer!

Actually, we did this on video as well as we’re doing it now on audio. I’m not exactly sure how this one’s going to come together.

But, it’s going to be packed with information that we’re about to share with you now. Today, I drove the 2019 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport.

Bryan Miranda: Correct. Yes.

“…his depth of knowledge in Toyota and in the Tacoma, really in the whole lineup of the Toyotas, was beyond impressive.”

Tom Smith: I loved it, and it was the long…

Bryan Miranda: The long bed.

Tom Smith: It was the long bed.

Bryan Miranda: Yeah.

Tom Smith: Okay. Now, the Tacoma has always been… The small Toyota truck when it was back… What was it called? The T1000?

Bryan Miranda: The T100.

Tom Smith: The T100, excuse me. Back when one of the first Back to the Future movies came out with Michael J. Fox, Michael J. Fox’s character got the Toyota pickup truck at the end of it and I’ve always wanted one ever since.

#TacoGang

I’ve actually never driven one until today, so it was a really good time to drive one. Thank you again for going along.

Bryan Miranda: You’re very welcome, Tom.

Tom Smith: We had a great drive. The highway driving, the byway driving, super smooth truck. It was a truck. It’s not one of those trucks where…

Some trucks these days get criticized because they don’t drive like a truck, they drive like a car. It’s a Tacoma, right. It’s Toyota.

Toyota has a cult following. Tacoma. Tacoma has a serious cult following. In fact, during our podcast earlier, Bryan was saying… what is it? #TacomaGang?

2019 Toyota Tacoma TRD Skid Plate

Plenty of ground clearance!

Bryan Miranda: Tacoma gang, yeah.

Tom Smith: Full on Tacoma gang or Taco gang?

Bryan Miranda: #TacoGang.

Tom Smith: Taco gang. All right. Do you know these guys?

Bryan Miranda: It’s just basically a hashtag they use on Instagram, on social media, Facebook. People just put their Tacoma’s online and they put the hashtag for short term Tacoma.

Instead of putting Tacoma, they put #taco because those are the first four letters of the word Tacoma.

Tom Smith: Right, right.

Bryan Miranda: They just short term it for Taco Gang and all that stuff.

TRD Pro embroidered seat close-up

Tom Smith: Okay. You can tell I don’t know this. I’m sure our social media, iDriveSoCal social media guru Heather Young… Hey Heather, how you doing?

Thank you for all your help on social media. She is the power behind iDriveSoCal’s social media, so I’m sure she knows that. If not, #TacoGang. Word, taco gang. All right.

The Tacoma’s an awesome truck. I just absolutely loved it. I’ve always loved the outside, and in this case, it has that hood scoop looking thing.

2019 Toyota Tacoma SR & SR5

Let’s talk first, the trim that I drove was, again, the TRD Sport. Take me from the base to the tippity top trim levels and general MSRPs, please.

Bryan Miranda: Okay, so first it starts off with the Toyota Tacoma SR, which is an access cab. It’s not a double cab. It’s just the two doors by themselves.

Tom Smith: With a little …

Bryan Miranda: Yeah, with just the two doors in the front and no back-passenger seats.

Picture of a video screen camera taking a picture of an iDSC Podcast in the making

The ole picture of a picture… picture. 🙂

Tom Smith: Not even those little jump sets, not even that?

Bryan Miranda: No.

Tom Smith: Okay, so just the two-door truck?

Bryan Miranda: Just the two-door truck… very basic. That one comes with a 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine.

Tom Smith: Okay.

Bryan Miranda: That one starts around 26, 27 grand MSRP. Then comes SR5, which you can get a double access cab.

Which means you can get the two doors plus the passenger seat in the back, but it won’t be as big as a double cab. That starts off a little bit more expensive.

Tom Smith: That’s the access cab?

Bryan Miranda: Yeah, the access cab with the passenger seat in the back.

Tom Smith: The SR is just a regular cab.

Bryan Miranda: Correct.

Tom Smith: The SR5 is the access cab?

Bryan Miranda: Mm-hmm (affirmative).

Tom Smith: It’s not four doors technically, but you have the seats in the back.

Bryan Miranda: You have the seats in the back and it has … instead of the whole door, it has like half a door where you have to open it.

Tom Smith: Right, right, right. Got it. That’s the SR5. The SR5 MSRP?

Bryan Miranda: It’s around 28, 29 grand.

Tom Smith: Okay. Then the next step?

Bryan Miranda: The SR5 Double Cab, which has all the four doors.

Tom Smith: Okay. What are we talking there MSRP?

Bryan Miranda: $30 to 32-grand.

2019 Toyota Tacoma TRD(s) & Limited

Tom Smith: Okay. What’s next after that?

Bryan Miranda: Then comes a TRD Sport.

Tom Smith: The TRD Sport, which is what I drove.

iDriveSoCal Podcast Interview Booth

Not only is Beans an Automotive Whiz Kid – but a stylish dresser too!

Bryan Miranda: Correct.

Tom Smith: Okay, and what are we talking about there, MSRP?

Bryan Miranda: $34,000.

Tom Smith: $34,000. Okay, and then?

Bryan Miranda: There’s TRD Off-Road.

Tom Smith: Off-Road, okay. And?

“It’s just basically a hashtag they use on Instagram, on social media, Facebook. People just put their Tacoma’s online and they put the hashtag for short term Tacoma.”

Bryan Miranda: That’s $36,000, $37,000.

Tom Smith: Okay. Then what do we have last? Limited, right?

Bryan Miranda: The Limited, but we have the TRD Sport with the tech package, which goes around 38 grand.

Tom Smith: Okay, so that’s $38,000. Then does the TRD Off-Road come with a tech package, too?

Bryan Miranda: Yeah, it comes with the tech package as well.

Tom Smith: What is that?

Bryan Miranda: The same price, 38 grand.

Tom Smith: Okay. Either way, the TRD Sport or the TRD Off Road is going to be 38 grand with the tech package. Then after that, we have the Limited trim, right?

Bryan Miranda: We have the TRD Pro. No, Yeah, the TRD Pro and then …

Front passenger profile 2019 Toyota Taco TRD Pro

Beastly beauty!

Tom Smith: I think somebody might’ve just got the Toyota of their dreams because there’s a big round of applause here at West Coast Toyota. Yeah, anyway good times. It’s always fun to be getting a new car.

Again, West Coast Toyota Long Beach. This is where you’re going to come and get your Tacoma, and there’s so many versions of Tacoma. I just kind of interrupted us. The Limited is… What’s the MSRP range right around?

Bryan Miranda: 40-grand.

Tom Smith: $40,000, okay. We got the SR, we got the SR5, we got the SR5 Double Cab, we got the TRD Sport, TRD Off Road, either way with tech package, and we got the Limited.

Tacoma Engines & Power

Those are just the typical trim levels. Plus, you can dance them up with specific features in any given one that you want.

Bryan Miranda: Yeah, that’s correct.

Tom Smith: That’s not even talking about four-wheel drive options, too. Obviously, there are a gazillion… not a gazillion, but there’s many different ways. There’s a Tacoma for everybody.

Bryan Miranda: Exactly.

Tom Smith: However, you want to equip it, you can equip it. That’s also before we even talk about extra accessories that we chatted about during our drive as well.

Of all the different trim levels, let’s talk motors.

Black 2019 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro driver side profile

Nice color scheme inside the dealership!

Bryan Miranda: The first motor you can get is the 2.7.

Tom Smith: The 2.7?

Bryan Miranda: Mm-hmm (affirmative).

Tom Smith: That is a four cylinder?

Bryan Miranda: Four-cylinder.

“The V6 has 278 horsepower and 265 lb-ft of torque.”

Tom Smith: That comes in the SR, correct?

Bryan Miranda: Correct.

Tom Smith: Not the SR5. It’s only coming in the SR.

Bryan Miranda: SR.

Tom Smith: Okay, and then all the other ones have the same motor, correct?

Bryan Miranda: The 3.5-liter V6 engine.

Tom Smith interviews Bryan Miranda at the iDSC Podcast booth

West Coast Toyota Long Beach & iDSC Podcast production

Tom Smith: Okay, 3.5 V6. What is the horsepower and torque we’re getting?

Bryan Miranda: From the V6?

Tom Smith: Yep.

Bryan Miranda: The V6 has 278 horsepower and 265 lb-ft of torque.

Tom Smith: Got you. Let’s go back to the SR’s engine with the V4. What kind of torque and horsepower are we getting there?

Bryan Miranda: The four four-cylinder we’re getting 151 horsepower and 180 lb-ft of torque.

Tom Smith: Okay. Got you. All right, so a Tacoma for everyone, without a doubt. The Tacoma is so identifiable on the road.

It looks absolutely gorgeous. I love the hood scoop on the one that we drove today. The gas mileage is surprising, too.

Fuel Economy

Bryan Miranda: Oh yeah, definitely. For the four by two you’re going to get better gas mileage since it’s real wheel drive, but if you option for the four by four you lose two miles per gallon.

Tom Smith: Okay, and what was that gas mileage we were getting… well, rated for anyway .. today?

Bryan Miranda: For the four by two we were getting 19 in the city, 24 on the highway.

Tom Smith: Then we’re going down to 17 and, what is it, 22?

TRD Pro wheel close-up

So shiny my shoes are reflecting!

Bryan Miranda: Mm-hmm (affirmative).

Tom Smith: With four-wheel drive.

Bryan Miranda: Four by four, correct.

“…we were getting 19 in the city, 24 on the highway.”

Tom Smith: Now the four-wheel drive in the world of Tacoma, it’s really… Tacoma has great traction with just the four by two. We were talking about…

Because I’m seriously looking at this and seriously considering it from a buyer’s perspective. I asked Bryan, “Hey, do I need four-wheel drive to simply go up to Mammoth to go take the family skiing?”

Bryan Miranda: No. Actually, since Tacoma has a really good traction control system. The Tacoma will kick in any time the wheel is losing traction.

In case you experience slipping or one tire has no traction, the other tire does, the Tacoma is very excellent to go off-roading. If you’re going to be doing some serious off-

Tom & Bryan "Beans" Miranda

Bryan “Beans” Miranda

Tom Smith: Off-roading, even with just two wheel drive?

Bryan Miranda: Correct.

Tom Smith: If you’re going to be doing serious off-roading, four wheel drive, sure, go ahead. You can go that route.

Bryan Miranda: Four by four, yes, it’s recommended if you’re going to be doing much more serious off-roading.

Toyota Tacoma Technology

Tom Smith: The technology on the TRD Sport that I drove, is that pretty much the same tech that we’re going to have as we go up to the Off-Road or the Limited?

Bryan Miranda: Yes.

Tom Smith: Toyota sensing navigation?

Bryan Miranda: Navigation, the Toyota Safety Sense. You’ll have a little bit more creature comforts towards the upper trims.

TRD Pro Wheel

Wonder what it looks like muddy?

Tom Smith: Okay. With the tech package… so the TRD Sport that I drove, we had a cloth interior.

Bryan Miranda: Correct.

Tom Smith: Very comfortable. With the tech package, you’re going to get a few creature comforts that I think a lot of people might be interested in. Those are leather and…

“You’ll get the JBL premium sound system. You’ll get automatic climate control, heated seats, and the power sliding moonroof.”

Bryan Miranda: Leather. You’ll get the JBL premium sound system. You’ll get automatic climate control, heated seats, and the power sliding moonroof.

Tom Smith: Dual climate control, right?

Bryan Miranda: Yes.

Tom Smith: All right. Okay, so the Tacoma, the outside, I love the grille. You were telling me the grille’s different on…

Bryan Miranda: Yeah, the grille is different based on what particular trim you get.

Tom Smith: Okay.

Bryan Miranda: The Sport and the Off-Road pretty much have the same grille. Where it starts to really change is if you get the Limited and the basic SR and the SR5 trim.

Tom Smith: Okay, so in any trim level you go with, the grille is very distinctive. The vehicle is very distinctive. It has a bold front end and I love that. It’s bold from every angle, really, and I really love that. What else about the 2019 Toyota Tacoma from our good friends here at West Coast Toyota?

Toughest Tacoma to Find

Bryan Miranda: If you’re looking for a great, reliable, durable truck that you want to keep it for a really long time, you cannot go wrong with the Tacoma. Toyota has been known for their reliability for many, many years.

They’re looking to get more people interested in a Tacoma. It’s been out since the ’60s, ’70s, and it’s still a really great truck. What I forgot to mention was that Toyota also has a more off-road version, which is the TRD Pro that we…

Tom Smith: Wait a minute, I thought we covered… There’s a TRD Sport, a TRD Off-Road, and then a TRD Pro?

Bryan Miranda: TRD Pro, yeah.

Close-up of TRD Pro nameplate

Oooooh Yeah! 😀

Tom Smith: Holy cow.

Bryan Miranda: Yeah, the TRD Pro is the one… It’s basically like a mini Ford Raptor.

Tom Smith: Now you were telling me that the Limited is the hardest Tacoma to get. Is that not necessarily the case when you factor in the Pro?

Bryan Miranda: No, yeah, no. The Limited is still the hardest because…

Tom Smith: There’s just so few of them made.

Bryan Miranda: There’s very few of them. There’s one in 20 dealerships that have them. We used to have it. It got sold.

Tom Smith: They come and go real quick.

Bryan Miranda: They come and go real quick since not a lot of dealerships have them at all.

“The Limited is still the hardest because… very few of them. There’s one in 20 dealerships that have them.”

Even the biggest dealerships of Toyota don’t even carry that car because they’re just so rare.

It’s more rare than the TRD Pro, to be quite honest with you.

Tom Smith: The Limited?

Bryan Miranda: The Limited, yes.

Tom Smith: Okay. The TRD Pro. You guys have one sitting right here.

I think earlier you had one over there and they were two different colors. I understand that dealers get them, but they’re very few and far between, and each dealer only gets a handful of them every year. Is that correct?

Serious Off-Roading

Bryan Miranda: The colors are the ones that are mostly hard to get. Let’s say if you want a cement TRD Pro, that’s a color a lot harder to find in different dealerships.

Tom Smith: Okay.

Bryan Miranda: Other than that, there is TRD Pros in almost any dealership you go to. Right here we have five, six of them in stock right now for TRD Pro, so we actually have quite a few of them in stock.

Tom Smith: Okay, and what’s special about the TRD Pro?

Bryan Miranda: The TRD Pro is if you want a vehicle that you can go completely off-road and you want the Crawl Control, you want Downhill Activation Assist. The TRD Pro-

Tom Smith: TRD Pro’s a serious off-road?

2019 Toyota Tacoma TRD Skid Plate

Plenty of ground clearance!

Bryan Miranda: Exactly.

Tom Smith: You don’t get that to drive… You get that specifically to go off-road.

Bryan Miranda: Off-road, yes.

Tom Smith: You got the TRD Off-Road. You got the TRD Sport. You’re something stay on road mostly, but you can go off-road. You got the TRD Off Road, and you can go off-road with that.

Bryan Miranda: No, definitely.

Tom Smith: The TRD Pro is serious off-road.

Bryan Miranda: Serious off-roading. Yes.

Tom Smith: Here in Southern California, that’s a big one, right?

“…if you want a vehicle that you can go completely off-road and you want the Crawl Control, you want Downhill Activation Assist.”

Bryan Miranda: Yeah, definitely. A lot of consumers actually like the TRD Pro because it also comes standard when you buy it with all the bells and whistles standard.

Tom Smith: Because we’d covered all the pricing except for the TRD Pro. What are we looking at for that?

Bryan Miranda: $48,000.

Tom Smith: $48,000?

Bryan Miranda: Yep.

Tom Smith: Okay, whereas the TRD Off-Road is around $38,000, the Limited is around $40,000, the TRD Pro…

Bryan Miranda: Is $48,000.

Tom Smith: Is $48,000.

Bryan Miranda: Yep.

Tom Smith: Okay, so this thing is equipped for serious off-roading right as soon as you leave the dealership?

Bryan Miranda: Correct.

Top 3 – Toyota Tacoma

Tom Smith: My top three things about the 2019 Toyota Tacoma, there’s so many to pick from, I’m kind of a hard time to do it.

This is a little bit strange because typically Clinton “The Professor” Quan. Or, my other reporter, iDriveSoCal’s other reporter, Bernadette Sanicola, would be doing the review.

And, I’d be interviewing them, and then they would tell me what their top three things are.

In this case, you came along with me, so I was the driver, so I’m going to do the top three.

Bryan Miranda: Okay.

1-Styling

Tom Smith: Okay. I’m going to say my number one is the styling. I love the… There’s so many things, it’s hard for me to say which is top three.

The styling of the Tacoma, I absolutely love it. The hood scoop. I like it with the hood scoop, I like it without the hood scoop.

I like it with different running boards, and I like it without running boards. The exterior styling I love, even just the graphics of the TRD I love. I’m going to say the interior styling as well.

It’s big for me for a truck, and it feels like a truck, but it’s comfortable, it’s smooth.

I guess the other thing I’m going to say is the drive. We got styling is number one, the drive is number two.

2-The Drive

I like driving it. We took it on the 405 and put, I don’t know, I don’t want to say how many miles we put on it, but we had a good time driving it.

We drove it on the highways, we drove it on the byways, the surface streets, and it was smooth all the way around.

This is one thing I have to point out on the drive. Even though we drove along a TRD Sport long, I did a few U-turns, and that turning radius is ridiculous!

That has better turning radius than a little sports sedan that I drive. It’s crazy.

3-Power

Then my third thing I’m going to say is the power. Number one is styling, number two is the drive, and number three is just the power of the vehicle and the engine.

I got on it a couple of times. What was the term, Bryan?

Bryan Miranda: Give it the beans.

Tom Smith: Give it the beans!

I forgot to ask the Professor about that one. Give it the beans. I gave it the beans a couple of times and it sounds great. It’s got a ton of power, a ton of horsepower, a ton of torque.

We went pretty long on this one. Bryan, thank you so much. I really appreciate it.

West Coast Toyota Long Beach

Bryan Miranda: You’re welcome, Tom.

Tom Smith: Okay, we’re going to give Bryan’s contact information. What is your email address here?

Bryan Miranda: My email address, I will be more than happy to give out my personal email if that works.

Tom Smith: Sure. What’s your personal email?

Bryan Miranda: It’s bryantm1127 [at] gmail [dot] com. It’s spelled bryantm1127 [at] gmail [dot] com.

This is probably the view TRD Pro’s off-road competition sees a lot of.

Bryan Miranda: Bryan, yeah.

Tom Smith: Okay. For a second I’m like, “Wait a minute, I’ve been calling you Bryan all day long. What do you mean Bryant?” That just happens to be the pronunciation of your email address.

Bryan Miranda: Yes.

Tom Smith: Okay, so Bryan Miranda of West Coast Toyota here in Long Beach. Thank you so much. Great day going for a test drive. I look forward to doing lots more.

Come to West Coast Toyota. We mentioned the MSRPs. Again, those are just MSRPs. Don’t worry about MSRP. Come here, West Coast Toyota’s going to take the best care of you.

Plus, you have to equip the car the way you like it. As we mentioned, there’s lots of different ways to equip, especially the 2019 Toyota Tacoma. Thank you, again.
