2020 Chevrolet Equinox Review

The 2020 Chevy Equinox is a compact crossover SUV that seats up to five.  It drives big performance, classic styling, and a highly functional interior.

And thanks to its universal appeal the Equinox has become Chevrolet’s second-best-selling vehicle.  In fact, since it’s U.S. launch Chevy has sold nearly 3-million Equinoxes.

Fun fact: Only Silverado tops Equinox in Chevrolet sales volume.

Here’s my complete 2020 Chevrolet Equinox review after picking one up from my friends at Martin Chevy in the South Bay of Los Angeles.

Added safety features for 2020 Equinox

Equinox In Chevrolet’s 2020 Crossover SUV Line-Up

For 2020, Chevrolet continues the third generation of Equinox which started with the 2018 model year.

And currently, Equinox is the second smallest crossover SUV offered by Chevrolet.  But that’s about to change.

Because in the spring of 2020 Chevrolet is adding yet another vehicle to its already robust crossover SUV line-up.

So, with the reintroduction of the Trailblazer, Chevy is officially blowing the doors off of the traditional vehicle class designations.

Those used to be; subcompact, compact, midsize and full-size.  And since Chevrolet doesn’t really define each new class size, I’ll do that here.

Come mid-2020 here’s what the Chevy crossover SUV line-up will look like – smallest to largest.

2020 Chevrolet Crossover SUV Line-Up:

  • Trax – subcompact
  • Trailblazer – subcompact/compact
  • Equinox – compact
  • Blazer – compact/midsize
  • Traverse – midsize/full-size
  • Tahoe – full-size
  • Suburban – oversized

And I will point this out.  That’s, with the soon to be released Trailblazer and Blazer Chevy’s, designed them as more crossovers than SUVs.

In fact, both of those vehicles take their styling cues more from the hot-rodding Chevrolet Camaro.  Whereas the rest of the crossover SUV line-up takes its styling cues from the more truck-ish Tahoe.

2020 Chevy Equinox Trim Configurations & Pricing

Chevrolet keeps it pretty simple with four primary optional trim figurations.  And those are below, with engine options, and starting manufacturers suggested retail pricing.

2020 Chevrolet Equinox Trims & MSRPs:

    • L w/ 1.5L Turbo 4-cylinder $24,995
    • LS w/ 1.5L Turbo 4-cylinder $27,495
    • LT w/ 1.5L Turbo 4-cylinder $28,695
    • LT w/ 2.0L Turbo 4-cylinder $31,195
    • Premier w/ 1.5L Turbo 4-cylinder $32,595
    • Premier w/ 2.0L Turbo 4-cylinder $35,295

Transmissions, Engines & Fuel Economy

So, all of the above pricing is for front-wheel-drive.  Add $1,600 and you can include all-wheel-drive.  That’s available for all but the base L-trim level.

Additionally, you have two optional transmissions.  There’s a 6-speed automatic that comes with the 1.5L turbocharged 4-cylinder while a 9-speed automatic comes with the 2.0L.

2020 Chevrolet Equinox wheel

Up to 31 mpg highway

And here’s the horsepower and torque stats on the two turbocharged 4-cylinder engine options.

Turbocharged 4-cylinder Engine options:

    • 1.5L – 170 hp w/ 203 lb-ft of torque
    • 2.0L – 252 hp w/ 260 lb-ft of toque

Depending on your engine and drivetrain (all or front-wheel drive) your fuel economy will vary a bit.  But in all instances, Chevy Equinox delivers solid mpg performance.

In the city, Equinox is rated for between 22 and 26 mpg.  And on the highway, 28 to 31 mpg.

What Does Chevrolet Equinox Look Like?

While the exterior of the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox leans more toward crossover than SUV.  It definitely keeps the SUV aesthetic that I personally prefer.

And sure with all-wheel-drive its off-road capable.  But like many crossovers, most buyers are driving this on-road.

Fun to drive 2.0L turbo 4-cylinder

The 2020 Chevrolet Equinox has a clean and classic crossover SUV look.  And it doesn’t give the appearance of a vehicle that’s in a compact class.

driver rear

3,500 lbs. towing capacity

Chevrolet offers a number of optional packages.  Highlighting those are the returning sporty Redline Edition and, new for 2020, Midnight Edition.

Exterior color options:

  • Cajun red tintcoat*
  • Iridescent pearl tricoat*
  • Pacific blue metallic
  • Nightfall gray metallic
  • Silver ice metallic
  • Chocolate metallic
  • Summit white
  • Mosaic black metallic
  • Cayenne orange metallic*
  • Midnight blue metallic

*Extra cost color

And both add really sharp looking black aesthetics including special wheels, accents, and cool black Chevrolet bowtie emblems.

Exterior Metrics (inches):

  • Wheelbase: 107.3
  • Length: 183.1
  • Width: 72.6
  • Height: 65.4
  • Track: 62.2 (front & rear)
  • Ground clearance: 7.6 to 8.0 (drivetrain dependent)
  • Curb weight:  3,274 to 3,665 (configuration dependent)
  • Towing capacity: 3,500 lbs (2.0L)

Inside the 2020 Chevy Equinox

So the interior of the 2020 Equinox has been criticized by some of my auto journalist peers.  And, I disagree.

Specifically, some of the ‘other guys/gals’ feel the interior materials should be of higher quality.  And both passenger and cargo space is lacking.

Versatile driver seating & wheel adjustments

Now, my test-driver was the LT trim.  But it had cloth upholstery and I didn’t feel it was of lower quality at all.

Conversely, I was immediately impressed by how comfortable I was able to position my driver’s seat with the steering wheel.

backseat partial down

User-friendly folding backseats

In fact, I was also impressed by the user-friendliness of the fold-down backseats.  They were a cinch to drop down from either side-door or through the cargo area.

Cargo area levers easily drop the backseats

And while Equinox doesn’t lead its class in cargo space the accessibility and ease of use are big pluses.

63.9 cu-ft of cargo space with backseats down

So the 2020 Equinox delivers 29.9 cubic-feet of cargo space.  But that’s with the backseats up.  Drop the backseats down and you have 63.9 cu-ft.

Hidden cargo space

Additionally, you can lift the floor of the cargo area to access completely hidden storage space.  And I love having a place to keep belongs completely out of sight.

Finally, in case you missed them in the pictures, there’s plenty of connectivity and charging ports throughout.

2020 Chevrolet Equinox Technology

For 2020 Equinox comes with either a 7 or 8-inch color infotainment touchscreen.  So, it depends on the trim configuration you go with mostly.

Apple CarPlay & Android Auto Standard

The L, LS and, LT comes standard with the 7-inch touchscreen.  While the 8-inch is standard on the Premier trim and optional on the LT.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard across all Equinox trims.  And big props to Chevy for that very logical move.  Because not all carmakers are doing that yet but they need to.

climate controls and ports

Wireless phone charging standard on Premier

Another standard feature that Chevy includes is its Teen Driver technology.  And big props for that as well.  Because it allows parents to monitor controls they set for their kids driving activities.

Equinox Safety & Driver Assistance

So here’s where Chevrolet can really beat its chest.  Because Equinox scores an overall 5-star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

NHTSA 5-star Overall Safety Rating

And that’s significant because, while it should be, it’s not all that common for crossover SUVs.

Also, Equinox comes nicely equipped with standard driver assistance as well as available add-ons.

2020 Equinox Driver Assistance Safety:

Standard:

  • Rear View Camera
  • Intellibeam Headlights
  • Forward Collision Alert
  • Front Pedestrian Braking
  • Following Distance Indicator
  • Automatic Emergency Braking
  • Lane Keep Assist /w Lane Departure Warning

Available:

  • Rear Park Assist
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Lane Change Alert w/ Blindspot Alert

2020 Chevy Equinox Top-3

So my Top-3 for the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox is perhaps a bit controversial if you read other auto journalist’s reviews.

  1. Drive: Now, I drove the 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder. And some of my peers say the 1.5L is sluggish.  But I can say without a doubt that the 2.0L is a quick ride and very responsive to maneuver.
  2. Interior: And here’s where others are disagreeing.  Because they feel the inside has a lower-end feel to it.  I say nope.  And beyond that, I love the storage, layout, and ease of use.
  3. Standard Tech: Being a Dad I love the safety features that come standard.  But I also am beginning to expect those.  So it’s the fact that all trims get standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto that really wins me over.

Martin Chevrolet

And if the 2020 Chevy Equinox might be for you then go see my friends at Martin Chevrolet.  Because they’re led by my dear friend Lewis Cook and his right-hand Ronnie Blomquist.

I’m happy to introduce you to Lewis and Ronnie.  And they’re going to help you buy what you want instead of selling you whatever works best for them. :0)  And of course they’re going to give you the best deal from a huge selection.
