The 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz blends pickup and SUV. Thinks Subaru Brat (way-way back) or more recently Subaru Baja.
It provides the flexibility of an open-bed and a closed cabin. As a result, you’re ready for your next road trip, light off-road duty, or quick run for errands.
Reimagined Design: 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz
Hyundai reimagined what it means to have a dual-purpose vehicle. Traditionally, the popular Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) met the needs of consumers who were looking for a road-going vehicle with off-road capability.
However, Hyundai found that within urban environments people expected more from their SUVs. Specifically, a vehicle that is nimble enough to navigate their urban setting while still having enough utility for a quick weekend adventure. In response, Hyundai created a new vehicle: the Sport Adventure Vehicle (SAV).
So what makes the all-new 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz an SAV? In short, the open-bed. By simply having this extra space, urban drivers can take on any challenge that’s thrown their way. From lugging lumber for their next home project to packing for a weekend camping trip.

Inside the 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz
Sitting comfortably within the cabin of the 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz, you would never guess that it’s a vehicle capable of going on off-road adventures. The interior is classy and packed with new technology that meets the expectations of any driver.
This includes connectivity with Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Thus, allowing you to access your favorite music Apps and more on the premium 10-inch edgeless infotainment screen.
Power and Transmission
The all-new 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz apparently not only looks the part, but it also has the power to back it up. Because Hyundai is offering a 2.5L direct-injected turbocharged engine option with an estimated 275+ horsepower and 310+ lb.-ft. of torque.
And that’s linked to an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission (DCT). Included with the DCT are steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters for that more sporty feel.
A standard powertrain option is available, that includes a 2.5L direct-injected in-line four-cylinder engine with an estimated 190+ horsepower and 180+ lb.-ft. of torque. This engine pairs to an eight-speed hydraulic automatic transmission.
Towing Capacity
It can’t be a truck if you can’t use it to tow! If you plan to pull some extra gear on your journey, the 2.5L engine is capable of towing up to 3,500 lbs. and the 2.5L Turbo AWD model boasts a generous 5,000 lbs. of towing capability.
What’s the Verdict on the 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz
While the SAV may be new to fans of Hyundai, let us not forget. Not only the aforementioned Subarus (Baja and Brat) but also Chevys. Because El Camino, HHR and Avalanche have all fallen into this tweener category in the past.
And all those vehicles have had mixed reviews in the past. But they have also had their fair share of fans! The 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz is due in dealerships in Summer 2021.
