It has been more than a decade since Lexus last graced us with a proper sports sedan.

So, in 2007 they debuted the IS F, a 400 horsepower V8 muscle sedan.  Since it left the production line, nothing from Lexus has been all that inspiring to the true automotive enthusiast.  It looks like things might be changing though because a new 2022 Lexus IS 500 has just been unveiled.

Not only does it have nearly 500 horsepower, but it’s also devoid of the excessive bloat that every other modern Lexus is beset with.  Have we mentioned that it’s starting under $57,000?  You get a whole lot for that money too including new exterior styling, a limited-slip differential, and a new sport suspension.

A Whole New Approach to F-Sport

Lexus says that after years of F-Sport cars like the CT 200h F Sport and the IS 250 F Sport, they finally hear the major complaint, F Sport cars aren’t powerful enough.  They say that’s why they dropped a 472-horsepower V8 under the bonnet.  It’s mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission and sends all of that power to the rear wheels only through a limited-slip differential.

Maximum power comes on at 7,100 rpm and max torque shows up at just 4,800 rpm.  Expect 0-60 times in the range of 4.4-seconds. All of those stats are big improvements over the previous top-of-the-range, the IS350 with a V6. The IS 500 also adds big suspension improvements too.

Yamaha is involved again and this time they’re making “Rear Performance Dampers”.  They’re built to reduce dynamic structural distortion and improve comfort as well as stability and agility. Every IS 500 will also come with a Dynamic Handling Package which adds adaptive suspension to the car.  Of course, the IS 500 looks like no other Lexus on the road too.

The 2022 Lexus IS 500 Looks Mean

There won’t be any mistaking the IS 500 when it rolls up next to you on the road.  The hood is raised substantially to help encase that large engine.

In fact, the entire front end is longer.  A special set of 19-inch Enkei wheels is standard as well.  At the rear, the IS 500 gets a black IS F Sport lip spoiler and a lower rear diffuser that complements the quad-barrel exhaust ports.

Inside, black F Sport Performance badging is featured on the door sill scuff plates and the leather-wrapped steering wheel.  The IS 500 also gets special pedals and a special animation that’s played on the interior screen when the car is started.  We can only hope that Lexus goes full send and builds an even more extreme IS F very soon.
