Deer Park Winery and Auto Museum - Escondido, California
Located in the vineyard-lined hills of northern San Diego County, Deer Park Winery & Auto Museum combines two of Southern California’s longstanding passions, wine and automobile history, into a single destination. Just off Interstate 15 near the Welk Resort, the property reflects the vision of real-estate developer Robert Knapp, who began assembling a wide range of vintage Americana, antique vehicles, and collectibles long before opening the museum to the public in 1979.
The automotive side of Deer Park is best known for its extensive convertible showcase, a collection highlighted in MOTORTREND and described as one of the largest of its kind anywhere. More than 100 antique convertibles, from early motoring examples of the 1800s through models of the late 20th century, anchor the display, supported by an eclectic mix of historical artifacts. Visitors encounter a curated assortment of period radios, televisions, signage, bicycles, and themed Americana rooms, including a fully dedicated Barbie exhibit and a Coca-Cola memorabilia gallery. Admission is available onsite without reservations, with discounted pricing for military visitors and adults over 55, and free entry for children nine and under.
Complementing the museum is Deer Park Winery, one of San Diego County’s oldest continuously operated family wineries. Established more than 50 years ago, the vineyard occupies 15 acres of orchards, vines, and picnic areas surrounding the museum complex. The winery’s portfolio includes estate-grown Merlot, Sangiovese, and other dinner-style reds, which are available for tasting Thursday through Sunday beginning at 10 a.m. Guests may purchase bottles, deli-style snacks, and picnic items from the gift shop to enjoy on the patio overlooking the grounds.
Together, the winery and museum form a multi-faceted visitor experience that blends local agriculture, regional history, and Americana collecting under one roof. For travelers exploring northern San Diego County, Deer Park offers a unique pairing: a relaxed wine-tasting setting supported by a broad, nostalgic automotive display that ranges from rare convertibles to mid-century pop-culture memorabilia.
