The Nethercutt Collection Automotive Museum - Sylmar, California

The Nethercutt Collection in Sylmar, in the northeastern San Fernando Valley, is widely regarded as one of Southern California’s most distinctive destinations for pre-war luxury automobiles. Part museum, part historic showcase, it combines American and European classics with mechanical musical instruments and decorative arts, presenting motoring’s so-called “Classic Era” as both engineering achievement and cultural history.

The institution reflects the vision of J.B. Nethercutt, co-founder of Merle Norman Cosmetics, whose first restoration project, a 1936 Duesenberg convertible coupe, set the tone for everything that followed. From the late 1950s onward, Nethercutt pursued a “100-point” restoration philosophy: every car is rebuilt to a standard of authenticity and finish that aims to match, and often surpass, original factory condition. That approach has earned the collection significant concours recognition over the decades and turned its in-house restoration shop into a reference point within the classic-car world.

The core of the collection focuses on early 20th-century luxury marques such as Duesenberg, Packard, Cadillac, and Rolls-Royce, supplemented by rarities including Bugatti and Cord. Vehicles are displayed in two primary spaces. The Nethercutt Museum offers a more traditional automotive layout, with everything from early horseless carriages to mid-century classics and a substantial display of mascots and memorabilia. Across the street, the Grand Salon, accessible only by guided tour, provides the museum’s signature experience: a multi-level, palace-like hall with marble, chandeliers, and period furnishings, where flagship cars share the floor with fully functional orchestrions, player pianos, and other mechanical musical instruments.

Admission to both the museum and the guided tour is free, in line with Nethercutt’s intent that the collection serve as an educational resource rather than a commercial attraction. However, reservations are required for the Grand Salon and typically book out well in advance. For visitors prepared to spend several hours on-site, the result is a highly curated look at pre-war luxury motoring, restoration craft, and period design. While it lacks the breadth of some larger institutions, The Nethercutt Collection stands out for its narrow focus, high presentation standards, and clear commitment to preservation and public access.
